Election Reflections and Recommendations.

Due to Gavin Newsom’s order that everyone receive their ballot by mail, your ballots may have arrived by the time you read this message.

I would like to share some of my personal recommendations for this election cycle.

For the governor’s race, I am leaning towards Steve Hilton, but I would be happy with Chad Bianco. That is to say, I am hoping that things are bad enough in our state that people will wake up and realize the current day Democrat Party has nothing to offer but more of the same, namely, the interrelated and cumulative impacts of inane policies and priorities resulting in the most unaffordable housing, gasoline, and electricity, not to mention the highest taxes, poverty, and homelessness, in the nation.

Our problem here in California, considering decades of failed leadership by elected Democrats, is that some people, namely Democrat voters and some Independents, are under the awful delusion that maybe the next Dem they vote for won’t be so bad. Let me tell you something. We haven’t had a good Democrat serving as Governor since Pat Brown. Having said that, Grey Davis would be an improvement over the likes of Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom, or any of the Dems running for governor in this election cycle; the party is becoming progressively worse over time.

Local Races

For the following races, please be advised that some of these are going to be over in June. You can’t wait until November to decide who you want to vote for.

Election Races Almost Set.

With the nomination period winding down, candidates for the June Primary Election are being set, with several positions having no one to challenge the incumbent. Information for this story is based on the “unofficial” candidates list issued March 19 by the SLO County Clerk-Recorder, who is the top elections official.

As for the Clerk’s job, she said, “My commitments for a stronger SLO County — fair, legal, and ethical elections. I am dedicated to ensuring fair, legal, and ethical elections for all residents.”

Rozo added, “I will vigilantly protect the nonpartisan nature of this essential role. This includes working to eliminate the disenfranchising of voter precincts, lobbying against gerrymandering, and holding candidates accountable for campaign fraud by utilizing the Public Integrity Unit.”

02-14-26: Vanessa Rozo Candidate For SLO County Clerk Recorder

SLO County Clerk-Recorder candidates talk campaign finance, election policies, and immigration enforcement.

With less than six months before the primary election, San Luis Obispo County clerk-recorder candidates are committed to increasing campaign donations, transparency in elections, and boosting voter safety.

Incumbent County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano, who announced her reelection campaign on Jan. 29, told New Times she raised $3,300 in contributions since January and is actively fundraising. Available campaign finance documents showed that she raised $714 in December 2025.

“I did not conduct fundraising outreach until late December because my responsibility throughout most of 2025 was administering the statewide special election,” she said.

Cano’s campaign finance filings show that she received donations from Salt Lake City parks maintenance employee Zennon Cano, and retired Los Osos resident Patrick Perry. She also supplemented her campaign funding with almost $830 from her 2022 campaign.

Cano will be defending her seat in the June 2 election against Oceano business owner Vanessa Rozo and former Arroyo Grande mayoral candidate Gaea Powell, who faces voter fraud charges from the District Attorney’s Office.

I’m running for County Clerk-Recorder to give back, uphold the law and ensure every resident’s voice is heard and counted,” Rozo told The Tribune.

“The duties of this office demand impartiality and a deep respect for due process. I am committed to serving every resident with that same level of professionalism.” The California primary election is on June 2.

Oceano business owner Vanessa Rozo enters SLO County Clerk-Recorder race.

San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano will have to defend her post against N-Hance Wood Refinishing owner Vanessa Rozo in the June 2026 primary election.

Oceano businesswoman Rozo is campaigning on a platform that mainly proposes to uphold accurate voter rolls and protect recorded property titles. She didn’t respond to New Times’ requests for comment. Campaign finance data showed that Rozo donated $1,325 to the Republican Party of SLO County in 2025. Her official campaign pages on Instagram and Facebook also contain pictures with Cal Poly Turning Point chapter representatives and with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco—a Republican candidate for next year’s state governor race.

California Woman Answers 'God's Calling' to Pay the High Cost for Families Saying Goodbye in Maui.

It's been a month since wildfires swept through part of the Hawaiian island of Maui. In the long road to recovery, one major struggle for families who lost loved ones is paying for a proper funeral service, but thanks to a woman from California, many are now getting the help they need.

"He was like, just Mr. Aloha. He had a heart of gold and anybody that would meet him on the street anywhere would just make friends with him, like everybody loved him," said Leona Castillo, describing her 28-year-old son Po'omaika'i Estores-Losano, who died in the August 8th wildfires that swept through Lahaina.

Estores-Losano leaves behind two young sons, his mother Leona and sister Jayna, who are still trying to come to terms with their loss.

"Oh, the fire, I guess it broke out really bad, so we tried calling him and calling him. He never picked up, but it went straight to voicemail. Oh, we couldn't reach anybody. To know, like, if he tried to run or the way that he went. We don't know if he was alone or how he went and that's just what breaks my heart," his mother told us.
